Lynleigh’s Story
Monday, May 22nd, 2023, Lynleigh’s journey began. Her mother & nana (Emma & Carol), took her to the pediatrician because she wasn’t feeling well. They told us she had an “oozing” ear infection, a yeast infection in her diaper area & a staph infection on her head for which they referred her to a dermatologist. We treated her infections with prescribed medicine for one week & took her back to the pediatrician on 5/29 because nothing seemed to be healing. They prescribed more medicine. We took her back to the pediatrician again 5/30 because she woke up with a loss of balance. They assumed she had an inner ear infection & referred her to an ENT.
On 6/2 Lynleigh took a turn. When she woke up she began vomiting & could not sit nor stand because of a lack of balance. We took her to an urgent care emergency department. The ED doctors assumed again that this was an inner ear infection & sent us straight to an ENT. The ENT cleaned her ears out & explained to us that her ear infection was not bad enough to cause her lack of balance. Then we realized there was something more serious going on. They sent us to an emergency room where they did a CT scan. They noticed what looked like fluid— possibly in her brain, so they did another CT scan to take a closer look. They discovered a mass— not in her brain, but in her head, close to her mastoid. They still didn’t know what it was so they sent us to a children’s hospital, where we were admitted for 5 days. 6/3 the children’s hospital did an MRI on Lynleigh’s brain & discovered a 3cm mass pushing on her mastoid and touching the meninges, which wrap around the brain. They still didn’t know what it was. Monday, June 5th, they performed a biopsy on the mass, and found that it was a tumor, caused by Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH). LCH is a rare, treatable yet incurable, cancer-like disease which affects only 5 in one million children. The LCH was also the cause of the supposed staph infection & yeast infection. The biopsy test results also revealed a BRAF mutation, making the LCH more difficult to treat & much more likely to come back. We made a plan to start chemotherapy treatments 6/20. However, 6/16 Lynleigh caught a fever of 101.8 from her cousins. The next morning she woke up with a rash all over her body. Since this was a new occurrence, we took her back to the ER that evening. They said the rash was caused by the fever & should come and go for a little while. The rash did not come & go; instead it got worse. We took her to the ER once more on 6/19 where they admitted her again. The rash was most likely caused by the fever but presented differently & worse because of her LCH. The next day, everything proceeded as planned. They took her for a PET scan, the port placement, & then she had her first chemotherapy treatment the night of the 20th.
When the results from the PET scan came back, we found out she has LCH in her mastoid, ear canal, her skin, lymph nodes, her thymus gland & her spleen. These placements make the LCH much harder to treat…but not impossible. We will trust God throughout this journey & believe that He will bring Lynleigh Rae through to a life of health, fun, & being a kid.
